How Business Geographics built a subscription product on Mango

How an Australian consultancy whitelabelled Mango to turn proprietary datasets into self-service, subscription-based mapping products for its clients.

Background

Mango is used by a wide range of consultants and companies that work with GIS and spatial data, helping them share interactive web maps with clients quickly and effectively. One of them is Business Geographics, based in Australia and a Mango customer since 2014.

Business Geographics helps organisations unlock the strategic value of geographic information — improving processes, acquiring customers, managing growth, and making better-informed decisions. With a focus on the childcare and education, property, franchising, not-for-profit, and welfare sectors, they build custom interactive maps in Mango that let subscribers view their own business data — stores, customers, sales territories — alongside third-party demographic data, all through an easy-to-use online map.

The problem Mango solved

Rather than simply using Mango as a presentation tool, Business Geographics whitelabelled the platform and built its own subscription service on top of it — turning proprietary datasets into a source of recurring revenue. For managing director Phil Henry, that opened up new lines of business:

Mango has enabled Business Geographics to develop innovative mapping products and services for our clients. It's helped us turn some of our services into subscription-based products and develop self-service data and analysis tools — the platform lends significant diversity and credibility to our offering.

— Phil Henry, Managing Director, Business Geographics

In practice, that spans managing online maps for non-GIS-savvy clients, commercialising proprietary datasets through a subscription model, and publishing informative maps to a wider audience to grow brand exposure.

Results

Clients love the maps — especially how easy and intuitive they are to use. Because Business Geographics can build and deploy a complex map quickly, clients get answers fast, with the information they need always available, including on mobile.

A Business Geographics map product

Just as valuable is what the team no longer has to worry about. Mango gave Business Geographics web-mapping capability without the headaches of building, hosting, and supporting its own system — reliable, scalable, and affordable, with a team behind it that's proven responsive whenever the rare issue comes up.

We spent many years looking for a solution like Mango to help grow our business. Most of our clients are non-technical, and Mango is the perfect introduction to GIS for them.
